about
Hi, Danika here. I wrote this song at a very challenging time. Content warning: I'd been sexually assaulted and went through a dark period of feeling lost and disconnected to the world around me. I wrote this as a way of regaining some power and making a stand for myself and others who have had similar experiences. It blew my mind to look at statistics and realise how many people (predominantly women) were in the same boat as me, silently holding it together, putting on a brave face and living through the grief. I'm still slowly making my way back into the world when talking openly about this. This is probably one of the first times I've publicly addressed my experience. I figure if i'm going to put this song into the world, then I want to use this moment to address what has been very real for me and for many others, and I want to be honest with the people who choose to listen to my music, because being real and multifaceted is important to me as a musician and a member of the community.
So thanks for reading, I hope the song helps some of you to feel less alone if you have had similar experiences. The core message of the song is to take care of yourself, back yourself, know you are worthy of respect, no matter what.
1800RESPECT is a helpful and kind resource for anyone who has experienced sexual assault.
Big love to you all,
D x
lyrics
I said come on,
Yeah yeah
I’m losing out
I’m flexing my head
And I’m flexing my heart
And I’m losing out
They say damaged goods
Are no good to anybody
Well fuck you all
I’ll be good to my own
Oh oh
Oh oh
I said come on,
Yeah yeah
I’m losing out
I’m flexing my head
And I’m flexing my heart
And I’m losing out
They say damaged goods
Are no good to anybody
Well fuck you all
I’ll be good to my own
coz all these men they take
But you can’t have any more
Oh all these men they take
But you can’t have any more
Oh all these men they take
But you can’t have any more
Oh oh
Oh oh
And I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
And I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
I don’t want to waste my time
I said come on,
Yeah yeah
I’m losing out
I’m flexing my head
And I’m flexing my heart
And I’m losing out
They say damaged goods
Are no good to anybody
Well fuck you all
I’ll be good to my own
Oh oh
Oh oh

Danika Smith performs a raw, timeless style of folk with undertones of jazz and soul. She is known for her tender topics,
honey stick melodies and charismatic satire. But something's shifting. It's 2020. Women in music are being recognized and supported, so she feels it's time to get experimental. Folk is heaven, no doubt, but curiosity, desire and the inner groove has begun Danika's metamorphosis...more
